Yeah, that Laura Loomer…Cruella deVil with a gold White House pass, the one who, before he had a chance to unpack his biretta and miter, pontificated about the new pontiff -- “He is anti-Trump, anti-MAGA, pro-open borders, and a total Marxist like Pope Francis… Just another Marxist puppet in the Vatican.”

I’d say that pretty much sums up what a lot of folks were hoping for when the cardinals locked themselves in last week. Really, with enemies like that, who needs friends?

Another pope like Francis is what she’s worried about. I understand. That old Argentine Jesuit brought entirely too much Jesus into Christianity for a lot of folks’ liking. Too much advocacy and attention to the kind of people Jesus ministered to and not nearly enough deference and favoritism show toward the type of folks the Gospels repeatedly warn us about. I guess if a preference toward working people, hungry people, desperate people is enough to earn the brand of Marxist in the eyes of Miss Loomer and Friends, Francis came by the sobriquet honestly and let’s hope most sincerely it will apply to his successor in equal manner.

As for being anti-Trump and anti-MAGA, well, I don’t think it’s necessary to recite a comprehensive litany of the lies, sins, and cruel, shameful behavior that are and have been advocated, committed, and condoned by the Current Occupant, his cronies and confederates. If I’m not mistaken, opposition to sin and evil-doing is pretty high up in the pope’s job description, so it would follow…

And about those open borders…

I’m certain the fact that Robert Prevost is a naturalized Peruvian citizen – an immigrant, if you will – gives him an understanding of and sympathy for the experiences of people leaving their native homes for places new and unfamiliar. He was a stranger in a strange land. Now he’s pope. An immigrant pope, well aware that hunger carries no passport. Fear has no visa. Human lives trump lines on a map every time.

No doubt Bob Prevost still looks around a bit confused when somebody says, “Your Holiness…”, but I have a hunch this fellow from the south side is gonna turn out fine. Yeah, I’m a little disappointed he roots for the Sox rather than the Cubs so I’ll not be agreeing with everything, but if Leo XIV turns out to be anything like the MAGA folks are carrying on about, well, I think Jesus would be pleased.
